Elon Musk has declared that the blocking feature is being eradicated for X users, which was formerly known as Twitter. He contends that this feature "makes no sense".
The X boss indicated that users will still possess the ability to prevent people from messaging them directly.
Yet, numerous individuals on social media noted that this will make it difficult for people to delete offensive posts from their timeline.
Since taking over the site in a $44bn deal last year, Mr Musk has implemented a series of changes, with the latest one being the most recent.
When people "block" an account, it means that the posts from that account will no longer appear in the timeline of the person who blocked it, and likewise, the posts of the blocker won't show up in the timeline of the account they blocked.
A blocked account cannot send messages to the person who blocked them, or view their posts.
Jack Dorsey, the former founder of Twitter, expressed his support of Mr Musk's choice by writing: "100%. Mute only."
However, worries exist that muting an account would not provide enough security from instances of harassment, mistreatment or stalking.
The mute function currently only eliminates notifications regarding posts from an account. Despite being muted, an account can still view posts and comment back to the muter.
One individual referred to Mr Musk's decision as a "major misstep", claiming there are "detrimental individuals" on the website whom users would not want to be affiliated with in any form.
The deletion of a hindering element can potentially breach the rules and standards of stores such as Apple's App Store and Google Play.
The two shops have rules that specify that social media programs must give users the opportunity to screen out any harassment or bullying.
This could indicate that X is no longer available for download from those stores.
Should the policy be put into action, it is uncertain if all those accounts which are currently blocked will be automatically released.
People can choose to keep their account private, which enables them to conceal their tweets from the public and only let accepted followers view their posts.
Elon Musk, being the wealthiest individual in the world, brought about a noticeable alteration when he assumed control of the social media platform, amongst these included the termination of the company's most eminent executive team and the implementation of a fee for the site's "blue tick" recognition - or confirmation - attribute.
Elon Musk is known for his frequent postings on X, with his over 153 million followers being aware that his messages often lack seriousness and do not always result in concrete action.
X rarely responds to journalist inquiries, so it is hard to confirm whatever he expresses in the name of the company. However, as he is the owner of the firm, his statements are noteworthy, even if they cannot be relied upon.
The block function is an established resource for those who feel attacked, harassed, or just want to stop interaction with an account that they strongly oppose (and X is rife with these types of accounts).
When you report an account on X, you are usually recommended to block or mute it during the investigation. This is not something unique to X.
Muting an account means you aren't shown what it posts - yet it can still see what you post. This can seem to be a strange situation for someone who is trying to avoid or is scared of the account in question.
Musk has articulated his wish for his "digital town square" to be a space in which all voices can be heard, however he is exposing himself to the possibility of rejecting both app store terms and social media regulations designed to shield users from online harms.
