Startup Aids Oceans in Taking Up More Carbon Emissions

Carbon removal from the atmosphere is an increasing area of business in the battle against global warming, and the ocean is being targeted as a huge potential resource. Described as the "lungs of the planet", the ocean generates half of the oxygen we require and absorbs a quarter of the carbon dioxide we produce. It has been harmed by the effects of climate change, as increased heat and carbon dioxide make it more acidic and unable to function properly. Companies such as Equatic, Captura, Running Tide and Ebb Carbon are utilizing new technology to restore the ocean's chemistry and bolster its natural capabilities. Ben Tarbell, co-founder and CEO of the last firm, stated that they anticipate removing up to a million tons of CO2 a year over the following five years, just by enhancing the ocean's natural abilities. This is done by installing their modules near the ocean, so that the seawater can flow through and be cleansed of acidity. This enables it to absorb CO2 more effectively, and store it as bicarbonate. Those looking for offsets to attain net-zero objectives, such as Stripe, are buying the carbon removal service. Attracting investors such as Prelude Ventures for the potential of such sales, Ebb Carbon has thus far raised $27.75 million. The cost of the technology currently stands at over $100 per ton of CO2 removed, though this may decrease as the modules are installed in more places, due to the utilization of existing infrastructure.
