Samsung and ASML to Invest $760M in Establishing Chip Facility in South Korea

ASML and Samsung Electronics have reached a deal to jointly invest 1 trillion won into the construction of a facility in South Korea geared towards developing state-of-the-art chip production technology. This announcement was made at a time when South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is in the Netherlands for a trip which he hopes will spark a "semiconductor alliance" between the two countries. Yoon had previously specified that these semiconductors hold the potential to be the pivotal point of a relationship between the Netherlands and Korea. ASML, the Dutch manufacturer of chip-making equipment, will collaborate with South Korean chipmaker Samsung Electronics to invest 1 trillion South Korean won ($760 million) to construct a factory specializing in state-of-the-art semiconductor processing technology in South Korea. This news was revealed as South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is in the Netherlands for a four-day visit to form a "semiconductor alliance" with the two countries.ASML is the sole producer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are essential for the production of the latest chips, such as those used in the most recent iPhones made by Taiwan's TSMC."The forward-thinking innovation of ASML has become an important catalyst of the Fourth Industrial Revolution across the globe, and Dutch semiconductor businesses such as ASML and ASM are establishing new facilities in Korea intended for production, research and development, and talent training," the South Korean presidential office said on Tuesday.Yoon and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands both visited ASML's headquarters on Tuesday before strolling around the production site of the upcoming EUV machines. Samsung is the largest producer of DRAM chips on a global basis, utilized in consumer-grade products like mobiles and computers. South Korean chip creators depend on ASML's EUV machines in order to manufacture faster and more effective chips than their opponents. The statement also declared that ASML will collaborate with SK Hynix, the world's second-largest DRAM chipmaker, to diminish electricity consumption and expenses for EUVs with the help of hydrogen gas recirculating technology. Yoon, prior to his journey to the Netherlands, explained to the AFP that semiconductors are "the keystone of Korea-Netherlands collaboration." He further stated that "the Netherlands is the host of ASML, which manufactures the lithography equipment that creates semiconductors, and the two nations have cooperated 'brilliantly' for a long time." According to Yoon, this will be a decisive milestone for the Korea-Netherlands semiconductor confederacy. He expressed that this journey to the Netherlands will support both countries in arranging a properly organized institutional system that will attentively manage global semiconductor supply chains, with semiconductors developing into critical resources and the geopolitical threats concerning global supply lines increasing.
