Sam Altman Leaves OpenAI as Board Loses Faith in His Leadership

OpenAI's board of directors announced on Friday that Sam Altman is no longer in the position of CEO, and instead chief technology officer Mira Murati will assume the role on an interim basis. The board expressed that they no longer believe Altman is suitable to lead OpenAI. Previously to taking control at OpenAI, Altman was the president of startup accelerator Y Combinator. Sam Altman will no longer be the CEO of OpenAI, the company said Friday, after the board of directors conducted "a deliberative review process" and concluded that Altman was "not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities."Mirá Murati, OpenAI's chief technology officer, will be taking over on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is found. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, will be stepping down as chairman of the board but will remain in his role at the company.OpenAI's board of directors includes chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and independent members Adam D'Angelo of Quora, Tasha McCauley, and Helen Toner of the Georgetown Center for Security and Emerging Technology.The technology firm, which has received billions in funding from Microsoft and topped CNBC's Disruptor 50 list this year, made headlines late last year with the launch of its ChatGPT AI chatbot.The news of Altman's departure was the talk of the town in Silicon Valley, where the Y Combinator president-turned-investor had become an ambassador of sorts for the AI industry. Microsoft shares took a hit, closing the day down 1.7% at $369.84.The tech giant, which has a long-term agreement with OpenAI, said through a spokesperson that it "remains committed" to Murati and to the partnership going forward. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella echoed that in a post on X.At OpenAI's first developer conference this month, Nadella made a surprise appearance and joined Altman on stage to discuss the startup's AI technologies.Altman didn't provide information when asked about his leaving, but he said in a post on X that he "loved" working at OpenAI. He added that he would talk more about "what's next" later.
