Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has been removed from his position by the company's board of directors due to their lack of faith in his leadership abilities.
The board noted that Mr Altman had not always been forthright in his communications, thus precluding it from effectively fulfilling its responsibilities.
OpenAI is stoking the fires of enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence with their ChatGPT bot.
Mr Altman was instrumental in initiating the firm.
The 38-year-old had also been serving as a face of the rapidly developing industry, testifying before Congress this year about fresh regulations for artificial intelligence.
Mr Altman expressed his appreciation for his time at the company through a post on social media.
He penned, “This experience has been transformative for me, and I hope it has also had a positive effect on the world. Above all else, I was privileged to work with such talented people. I will have more to share about what is to come later.”
The board expressed its gratitude for Mr Altman's input, yet members were of the opinion that new leadership should be brought in.
OpenAI's board declared that it lacked conviction in his capacity to remain in the role of leader, following a lengthy examination of the circumstances by the board which disclosed that he had not been straightforward in his communications with the board, thus impairing its capacity to perform its duties.
His departure generated waves of shock throughout the sector.
Ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt proclaimed Mr. Altman a "hero of his" on social media, hailing him for transforming "our collective world" for eternity.
He exclaimed that he was eagerly anticipating what was in store for the future and that the work of the individual he referred to would be of immense benefit to him and countless others; it was something he was sure would be extraordinary.
Greg Brockman, President and co-founder of OpenAI, said he had vacated his position after Mr. Altman's dismissal.
In a statement posted X, Mr Brockman said: "I'm proud of the accomplishment we have achieved since beginning in my apartment eight years ago."
Despite all the obstacles that should have made it impossible, we have achieved a great deal together and endured both difficult and wonderful times. However, due to recent events, I must resign.
He stated that he would remain committed to the aim of producing Artificial General Intelligence that is secure and advantageous to all people.
In 2015, OpenAI began functioning as a non-profit.
In 2019, the company underwent a restructuring process, and is now supported by Microsoft who have provided billions in investment.
No longer than some weeks ago, OpenAI supposedly held discussions with potential investors to offer company stocks at a valuation higher than $80bn (£64bn).
The company declared that none of its board members - comprising a chief scientist from OpenAI, the leader of a celebrated query and answer application Quora, as well as an AI scientist related to Georgetown University - owned stocks in the organization and that their main assignment in governance was to "promote OpenAI's mission and uphold the ideals of its Charter".
