An assistant U.S. attorney recited a roster of potential witnesses set to appear in Sam Bankman-Fried's criminal fraud trial. Those named included his family members, Caroline Ellison (an ex-romantic partner and former Alameda CEO), Anthony Scaramucci, and a multitude of investors and organizations that were negatively impacted by the decrease in cryptocurrency prices, a consequence of the FTX implosion. The trial opened with jury selection on Tuesday and is expected to be finalized by Wednesday evening.
On day one of Sam Bankman-Fried's criminal trial, assistant U.S. attorney Danielle Sassoon named a list of potential witnesses, assembled by both the government and defense counsel, which includes Bankman-Fried's siblings and parents. The latter two, Allan Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, are now under scrutiny for allegedly misusing their connection to the former CEO of FTX to gain "millions of dollars in fraudulently transferred and misappropriated funds."
The list of potential witnesses also involves several former FTX executives and employees, such as Caroline Ellison, Alameda's ex-CEO and Bankman-Fried's former romantic partner, and Gary Wang, FTX co-founder and Bankman-Fried's childhood friend from math camp. Additionally, investors and other high-profile names are being looked at, including Anthony Scaramucci, founder of SkyBridge Capital and a friend and business partner of Bankman-Fried, and Alfred Lin from venture capital investor Sequoia Capital.
Entities like Genesis, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Ontario Teachers Pension Fund, Third Point, Signature Bank, and Voyager Digital may also take the witness stand in the trial, as many of them were impacted by the collapse of cryptocurrency prices, which was partially caused by FTX's downfall.
At the end of the afternoon session, jurors were asked if anyone had watched the recent "60 Minutes" interview with author Michael Lewis, who has been in the process of writing a book about FTX. Many of them raised their hands.
