Roblox, a hugely successful children's gaming platform, has revealed their intention to roll out on Sony's PlayStation consoles.
Roblox boasts 60 million players daily, but it has faced criticism due to the lack of moderation of its content.
Other announcements were for creating characters in a different manner, a communication tool referred to as Roblox Connect, and a complete release on Meta's virtual reality platform Quest.
It is scheduled to be released on PlayStation 4 and PS5 in October 2023.
It had only been accessible for play on computers, mobile devices, and Microsoft's Xbox One console.
Roblox is taking a sizable step forward as it consolidates its standing as one of the leading gaming services globally.
Its popularity is uncertain, however, in 2020 Roblox declared to Bloomberg that two-thirds of American youngsters aged 9 - 12 participate in the game.
In 2019, a survey of 400,000 UK children showed Roblox to be far more popular than its main competitor - with 67% of those surveyed revealing they played Roblox versus 23% who said they played Minecraft, the top-selling video game in history.
The driving force behind Roblox's success is its focus on creation. Unlike some other video games, Roblox puts players in the position of game designers by allowing them to create their own levels and scenarios. As a result, Roblox calls users developers instead of gamers.
Developers, usually children, have the ability to craft games and potentially even make Robux, an in-game currency that is acquired from other players.
It is lauded for providing an avenue to creativity and game design for youngsters, though that same flexibility and prevalence has been a source of criticism.
The NSPCC and Childline informed the BBC in 2022 that since the onset of the pandemic, the volume of kids calling their helpline with troubles related to Roblox had surged five times its original amount.
At Roblox's annual Developers Conference, it was announced that the launch was going to take place.
Roblox reported that the open beta of Meta Quest, launched earlier this year, had been positively received.
The beta version of the game, which could be accessed by those with either a Quest 2 or Quest Pro headset, saw more than one million downloads within the first five days; the full version of the title will launch on Quest before the end of the month.
Until now, the PlayStation version of the game, which had been requested by many, had not been released.
Little information was provided about the launch, but Roblox shared that users of both the old and the current versions of PlayStation will be able to access every Roblox experience.
Roblox unveiled Connect, enabling users to make calls to others within the game with their actual names, along with realistic body language and facial expressions.
Roblox will use a camera to translate the facial expressions of a person into their in-game avatar.
This motion-capture technology was initially released in August, and now Roblox Connect marks the first effort from the company to connect the technology with calling friends.
Roblox explained in a blog post that motion-capture technology is accessible to any player who is 13 years of age or older.
Players must first grant Roblox permission to utilize their camera prior to use, with the corporation declaring in a privacy statement that they do not record or retain information captured from a user's camera; "no video from your camera ever leaves your device".
It is still uncertain in what countries Roblox Connect will make its debut, with the business saying further info on this will be divulged at a later date.
