Google held its Made by Google event in New York City on Wednesday, unveiling the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, its latest attempts to gain a piece of the smartphone market dominated by the iPhone. The Pixel 8 starts at $699, while the Pixel 8 Pro begins at $999, a $100 increase from the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro. Although the Pixel brand accounts for a comparatively small portion of Alphabet's revenue, the tech giant is optimistic that their latest releases will have a positive impact on its sales. Shopping for the Pixel 8 phones and Pixel Watch 2, which starts at $349, is available starting Wednesday and the products will be available in stores on October 12th. Google's new products boast a number of features, such as improved camera functionality.
The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro boast curved edges and a more flattened display than previous year's models. Additionally, the Pixel 8's display offers refresh speeds that rival those of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which translates to a smoother experience when browsing the web and playing games. Furthermore, the phones run on Google's advanced Tensor G3 chip. This allows Google to integrate its powerful AI and machine-learning technology into the phone's camera.
The Pixel 8 Pro houses revamped AI-powered editing tools. Magic Eraser, which erases any undesired photos, is still present alongside a new Best Take feature. Best Take makes it easy to put together a group photo with everyone facing the camera and beaming. In addition, Google has advanced its Real Tone photo feature for more precisely capturing skin tones. If a video contains unwanted sound, users can remove it with Audio Magic Eraser. That way, should you be taping your kid's first bike ride and you notice a pesky truck sound, Audio Magic Eraser will help to eliminate the disturbance.
The Pixel 8 Pro has an incorporated thermometer, which is purported to be useful for gauging the temperature of drinks and kitchenware through scanning. It is not quite evident what other functions it might facilitate.Google remarks that its G3 Tensor processor will upgrade call quality and enable the mobile phone to discover and filter out a larger number of spam calls. The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro are the initial smartphones to be launched pre-loaded with Android 14.
Google unveiled its second Pixel Watch. Like the initial version, it uses the Fitbit platform which Alphabet obtained in 2021. An intriguing feature is the addition of stress tracking. The watch collects data like your heart rate variability and skin temperature to assist in identifying times of stress. It will then suggest beneficial activities such as taking a stroll or trying a guided breathing exercise.
The Pixel Watch 2 features upgraded heart rate monitoring and exercise recognition. Its battery life is identical to the original – with the always-on display activated, Google guarantees up to 24 hours of use.
