Universal Music has filed a lawsuit in Tennessee federal court against artificial intelligence startup Anthropic for supposedly engaging in "systematic and widespread infringement of their copyrighted song lyrics." The complaint cites Concord, the copyright owner of Katy Perry's "Roar," and Universal's rights to Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" as examples of the infringement. The suit states that Anthropic "unlawfully copies and disseminates vast amounts of copyrighted works." Music publishers such as Concord and ABKCO are also plaintiffs.
Founded by former OpenAI research executives in 2021, Anthropic has raised $750 million in two funding rounds since March and has been valued at $4.1 billion. In May, it was part of a group of four firms invited to a White House meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss responsible AI development, alongside Alphabet, Microsoft and Microsoft-backed OpenAI. In July, it debuted a new AI chatbot, Claude 2, with the ability to summarize up to around 75,000 words. Daniela Amodei, Anthropic's co-founder and president, stated that the company has been "focused on businesses" and has prioritized making Claude "as robustly safe as possible."
