Agriculture and the food system are responsible for approximately one-third of all global greenhouse gas emissions. Those growing what we eat require more and more land, leading to depleted soil and emissions. Yet, modern technology is enabling farmers and major food companies to make food production more sustainable. Regenerative agriculture is one such approach that aims to cut down on emissions while protecting the soil; this includes crop rotation, cover crops, boosting biodiversity, composting and incorporating livestock. Additionally, regenerative agriculture seeks to increase the resilience of crops against climate change. Regrow Ag is a startup that takes various data sources, ranging from satellite imagery to soil maps and on-ground findings, and applies a computerized model to study how soils and crops behave in different conditions. This information is sold to customers like General Mills, which has promised to regenerate one million acres of farmland by 2030. Moreover, farmers who employ sustainable practices are given payments for their contribution to the ecosystem by buyers like General Mills. Regrow Ag is financed by multiple investors, including Microsoft's M12 and Cargill, and has raised approximately $60 million in funding.
