Sony has revealed that their most recent Spider-Man title has broken records by becoming the fastest-selling game produced for PlayStation.
More than 2.5 million physical and digital editions of Spider-Man 2 were sold within the first day of its release, according to a blog post.
Since its launch on Friday for the PS5, Insomniac Games' new title - developed by the PlayStation brand - has earned overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Although its main story lasts 15 hours, it has received some disapproval.
That amount of time totals roughly 40 hours including optional side-content, which is par for the course for video games, although some releases in 2020 like Baldur's Gate 3 may offer hundreds of hours of playtime.
Spider-Man 2 has been commended for its portrayal of Puerto Rican culture, though some have expressed concern that the flag in the principal character's home was mistaken for that of Cuba.
The developers have promised to rectify the error.
Despite its title, Spider-Man 2 is not the first game in the series; it is actually the third, having been preceded by releases in 2018 and 2020.
In this newest iteration, players can choose between Peter Parker or Miles Morales - the two personas of the beloved superhero - as they explore a rendered version of New York City.
Eric Lempel, head of business operations at PlayStation, stated that Insomniac Games has set extremely high expectations for itself when it comes to providing captivating and original gameplay experiences.
I would like to extend my gratitude to the supporters - we sincerely hope you have been having an enjoyable experience playing as Peter and Miles in this remarkable journey.
Last week, high profile games such as Spider-Man 2, as well as brand new titles from Mario and Sonic, were released.
The releases of Super Mario Bros and Sonic Superstars generated a lot of buzz after these gaming competitors unveiled their titles in the same week for the first time in over three decades.
Spider-Man 2 achieved top billing in UK boxed video-game sales last week, emerging as the largest physical launch. It is further backed by its score on gaming-aggregator Metacritic, placing it among the highest-rated PlayStation 5 titles.
Despite being the largest physical launch of the year on PS5, the game has not yet had the overwhelming success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which sold more than 10 million copies within three days.
The video game, launched by Nintendo in May of 2023, has held the record for the largest physical video game launch in the UK.
Physical sales of Spider-Man 2 account for only some of the total 2.5 million copies sold, according to Christopher Dring, who heads the gaming news site GamesIndustry.biz. Most of the copies sold would have been digital, he said.
He noted that most of the games that are being bought nowadays are digital downloads.
Before the pandemic, approximately half of all games sold in the UK were in physical stores while the other half were digital downloads. However, since the beginning of 2020, the percentage of digital downloads has increased to more than 70%.
Boxed video games remain a significant source of sales annually; you still cannot download a game console or controller. Though, it is currently a far, far, far reduced share of the industry.
