Humane, a five-year-old AI startup founded by Apple alumni Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, unveiled their first product Thursday, the Humane AI Pin, a lapel-worn device priced at $699. The AI Pin serves as an alternative to a smartphone, allowing users to make calls, send texts, look up information, and benefit from laser display, turning a person's palm into a miniature screen to display the time and date or search nearby. Chaudhri noted that it doesn't always record or listen, only engaging when the user makes contact through voice, touch, or gesture. An additional $24 monthly data subscription fee to T-Mobile is required, and the pin is not linked to a smartphone.Humane raised over $200 million when they announced their $100 million financing round from Microsoft, LG's venture arm, and Tiger Global in March, contributions coming from OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, and Salesforce CEO, Marc Benioff, among others. As of November 16th, the pin is available for orders. During Thursday's 10-minute launch video, Chaudhri and Bongiorno discussed the device's features, which rely on Qualcomm's chipset (Qualcomm Ventures being an investor). The AI Pin includes a speaker, camera, and when activated, a light flashes. Double-tapping the pin takes a picture or records a video, viewable on the Humane web app. The device can simultaneously translate spoken language, Spanish to English and the reverse, and services from Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, and other companies are contributing AI services, with the customer able to access music with a subscription to Tidal. The AI Pin assistant can also summarize the user's daily calendar, messages, and health data, such as protein intake.
