Elon Musk conveyed to Joe Rogan that he acquired Twitter to impede an "extinctionist" congregation that was disseminating what he described as a "mind virus." Previously, Musk has voiced remarks or decisions with what appeared to be political inclinations, and has scorned what he calls the "woke mind virus" on various occasions.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, stated in a podcast appearance with Joe Rogan that he purchased Twitter in order to protect it from what he has called the "mind virus" - or what he sees as the effects of so-called "woke" or left-wing thinking. Musk stated that this philosophy had been provided with an "information technology weapon to propagate a mind virus to the rest of the Earth." Rogan then characterized this concept as "a death cult," which Musk agreed with. Musk also blamed this ideology for issues such as San Francisco having a "zombie apocalypse" atmosphere.
In spring 2022, Musk tried to back out of the deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion shortly after making the offer, but he was eventually forced to honor the binding offer and closed on the purchase by late 2022. Musk has been outspoken against "woke" thinking, previously claiming it was "suppressing" far-right viewpoints on social media platforms. He also relocated Tesla from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas in October 2021 due to Covid health orders; however, he later moved the engineering headquarters back to Palo Alto while keeping the corporate headquarters in Texas.
