OpenAI has officially introduced the ability for ChatGPT to browse the internet in real-time. Until recently, ChatGPT's capabilities have been limited to data sets up to September 2021. The unprecedented success of the AI technology since its launch last year has led to an acceleration of development by tech giants, as they compete to provide users with unique apps, features and UX experiences to differentiate their chatbot offerings.
It's official: ChatGPT has progressed beyond its previous limitations and can now search the internet in real-time. This development had been one of OpenAI's goals for the chatbot, the company behind it, and it has been in the works since March, when it first began testing the web-browsing parameter for a select group of users. This feature -- called Browse with Bing -- was then put on hold in June when it was found to be a way to bypass paywalls. OpenAI has since been re-implementing the feature, after allowing site owners to opt-out of the web-crawling. As of Tuesday, Browse with Bing is officially launched and ready for use.Beyond that, certain users in the beta version of the program are now able to generate images with OpenAI's DALL-E 3, a newer version of its image-generation artificial intelligence model. It can do this from a simple sentence and creates remarkably accurate images.Since it's launch last November, ChatGPT has been touted as the fastest-growing consumer app ever, according to a UBS study. Within two months, it already had about 100 million monthly active users, setting off an AI competition between tech giants to develop new features, apps and experiences. OpenAI are up against Google, which has its own AI-powered chatbot, Bard.To further their progress, Microsoft recently expanded its investment in OpenAI by $10 billion--the largest AI investment of the year, according to PitchBook. Then in April, OpenAI completed a share sale worth between $27-$29 billion, involving investors like Sequoia Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.
