Amazon is closing its physical apparel stores, about 18 months after the initial store opened. The company had opened two stores in Ohio and California. This move reflects Amazon's current assessment of its store strategy and its attempt to cut costs.
Amazon has confirmed that it will be shutting down its brick-and-mortar apparel stores after almost a year and a half since opening its first location. The two Amazon Style stores - located in Columbus, Ohio, and Glendale, California - will close by November 9th.A spokesperson for the company, Kristen Kish, released a statement saying: "After careful consideration, we've decided to close our two Amazon Style physical retail stores and focus on our online fashion shopping experience, where we're offering new, exciting selections at great value and introducing innovative technology to meet the needs of every customer. Physical retail remains an important part of our business, and we're continuing to invest in growing our grocery stores business, which spans Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market, Amazon Go, and third-party partnerships."The first Amazon Style store opened in January 2022 and was the first time the company had gone into selling clothes, shoes, and accessories in the offline world. Since then, Amazon has had mixed success in their physical retail endeavours. Last March, they closed down several of their retail chains, went through layoffs of around 27,000, and put any further expansion of their Amazon Go cashierless marts and Fresh supermarkets on hold temporarily.Kish also said that Amazon will still be opening new stores and refurbishing some of the Fresh store chains, with two of them recently opening in Chicago. Employees affected by the closing of the Style stores will be given the option to transition to other roles at Amazon, and those that choose not to stay with the company will be offered severance.
