Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, firmly rejected Elon Musk's suggestion of filing a lawsuit against the nonprofit for defamation. He shared a statement with CNBC, in which he denounced Musk's declaration that the ADL was "trying to kill this platform by falsely accusing it & me of being anti-Semitic". Greenblatt called it "flat out dangerous and deeply irresponsible" and called on "responsible leaders to lead [and] to stop inflaming hatred and to step back from the brink before it's too late."
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), dismissed allegations from Elon Musk on Labor Day weekend that the ADL was attempting to "kill" the messaging service X (formerly known as Twitter) by falsely accusing him of being anti-Semitic, calling his behavior "alarming," "reckless," and "flat out dangerous and deeply irresponsible." He further noted that multiple civil rights groups and researchers have documented a rise in hate speech, racist comments, and other inflammatory posts on X after Musk gained control last fall.
Musk claimed the ADL was responsible for a 60% drop in X's advertising revenue and alleged it would have "no choice but to file a defamation lawsuit" unless the ADL stops applying pressure. Greenblatt expressed that he had a "very frank + productive conversation" with X CEO Linda Yaccarino on how to address hate on the platform and he would give both Yaccarino and Musk credit if the service improves.
This prompted the hashtag #BanTheADL to trend on X, to which Musk engaged with some of the anti-ADL posts, liking some of the comments and even responding to them. Greenblatt decried that "it is profoundly disturbing" that Musk spent the weekend engaging with "a highly toxic, antisemitic campaign" started by a white supremacist and heavily promoted by other far-right activists. He also noted that masked men at a rally in Florida on Saturday were brazenly waving swastika flags and chanting "Ban the ADL." X did not respond to CNBC's request for comment.
